Friday, Feb. 26, 2010
New York City, NY
Peace Action Bay Ridge attended the Annual Meeting of Peace Action New York State at the Goddard Community Center in New York City on Saturday, Feb. 20th. The theme of the conference was achieving peace in 2010. After the Annual Business Meeting, participants broke up into workshops on Afghanistan, nuclear disarmament, foreign bases, 2010 elections, youth organizing, fundraising, lobbying, and public speaking. The annual meeting was attended by Bob Kassenbrock, Chair of Peace Action Bay Ridge, Vicki McFayden, Co-chair, Linda Orlando, Brian Kassenbrock and Bennett Silverstein. Participants came from as far away as Ithaca.
PANYS increased its membership 43% in 2009. It conducted coordinated lobbying visits to all seventeen US Senate offices in the State. It has built alliances with other organizations such as the Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives and welcomed No War Westchester into the organization as its 18th chapter. Other activities included vigils, guest speakers, awards, Hiroshima-Nagasaki Day commemoration, and a film festival.
Plans for 2010 include increasing membership, building relationships with unions, organizing youth, improving media exposure and fund raising, action alerts and petitioning for nuclear disarmament. More information may be found at www.panys.org.
