Vote for Peace in next week's New York Primaries PEACE DEMANDS ACTION -

Dear Peace Advocate,

Yesterday marked Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and tomorrow is Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan. It is time to review our past, consider our future, and start again in faith and peace.

We face critical challenges in this 2008 election year. Together we need to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq; prevent an attack on Iran; begin a new U.S. foreign policy based on respectful dialogue; and create a nuclear free world. Your action makes a big difference.

In the few days that Congress has left before its session ends, the Bush administration is trying to push approval of an agreement with India that would allow additional international trade in nuclear fuel and technology. The deal would allow India to expand its nuclear arsenal more easily by using scarce domestic uranium for weapons production while buying fuel for its power reactors on the international market.

The U.S.-India Nuclear Deal would undermine the already shaky Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) by allowing a country that developed nuclear weapons outside the Treaty the benefits of international nuclear trade, legitimizing India’s possession of nuclear weapons.

A senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee reminded his colleagues in a late session last Friday that “opposing the bill does not mean opposing India. This is a debate about Iran. This is a debate about North Korea, about Pakistan, about Venezuela, about any other country in the world that harbors the goal of acquiring nuclear weapons."

Last Saturday, the House of Representatives approved the U.S.-India Nuclear Deal by a vote of 298-117. 19 members of the New York State delegation voted in support of the deal. Only 8 members (Clarke, Hall, Hinchey, McNulty, Nadler, Serrano, Slaughter and Velazquez) stood up to the administration and voted no.   (Reps. Weiner and Walsh did not vote.)

Now it's up to us to stop it in the Senate!

We urgently ask you to call Senators Schumer and Clinton today. Tell them to stop the U.S.-India Nuclear Deal. Ask them to work instead for the global elimination of nuclear weapons and for safe, renewable energy alternatives. (Trade and investment in such technologies also would benefit the United States, by helping to accelerate the development and use of renewable energy around the world.)
  • Senator Charles Schumer: 202-224-6542
  • Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton: 202-224-4451
Please be involved in peace activities and do PEACE ACTION to make this next year a year of Peace.

In peace,

Mai Gad

BOOK PARTY AND FORUM: THE LEFT IN INDONESIA AND THE STRUGGLE AGAINST NEOLIBERAL GLOBALIZATION. With Max Lane. Co-sponsored by The East Timor & Indonesia Action Network. Since the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Indonesia has been trapped in an increasingly destructive neo-liberal economic straitjacket. The left, newly reborn out of the brief but victorious struggle it led against the Suharto dictatorship, is struggling to find the ideas and strategy to re-launch its progress and a new struggle against this onslaught. As social crisis and social discontent spread to all corners of society, new as well as renewed currents of left activism are emerging in response. They face the legacy of 35years of violent and systematic suppression of ideological life and of historical memory. In this context, Venezuela is now also offering inspiration. Sliding scale: $6/$10/$15.

BOOK READING AND DISCUSSION WITH STEPHANIE ELIZONDO GRIEST:
“MEXICAN ENOUGH: MY LIFE BETWEEN THE BORDERLINES.”

Growing up in a half-white, half-brown town and family in South Texas, Stephanie Elizondo Griest struggled with her cultural identity. Upon turning thirty, she ventured to her mother's native Mexico to do a little root-searching. She stumbled upon a burgeoning social movement that shook parts of the nation to its core. Mexican Enough chronicles her journey. She investigates the murder of a prominent gay activist, sneaks into prison to meet with resistance fighters, rallies with rebels in Oaxaca, and interviews scores of migrant workers and the families they were forced to leave behind. Travel companions include a Polish thief, a Border Patrol agent and a Dominatrix. Part memoir, part journalistic reportage, Mexican Enough illuminates how we cast off our identity in our youth, only to strive to find it again as adults -- and the lessons to be learned along the way. Free and open to the public. No RSVP required.

WHY AMERICA WILL HAVE TO GET OUT OF IRAQ REGARDLESS OF WHO WHINS THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, A LECTURE BY PATRICK COCKBURN.
Part of the Out Now! Lecture Program. Patrick Cockburn argues that a central political fact in Iraq today is that the great majority of Iraqis have always opposed the US occupation. Though Iraqi factions sometimes find it convenient to ally themselves with the US military, these alliances are based upon short term interests rather than any form of longstanding allegiance. The last five years have taught us that it is ultimately up to Iraqis to determine how and when the US withdraws. Free admission.

UNFINISHED NATION(S): ACEH, EAST TIMOR, WEST PAPUA, INDONESIA.”
A presentation by Max Lane.
More than half of Indonesia's existence as an independent nation was spent under a dictatorship that allowed the national economy to be subjugated by international capital. History was falsified on a mass scale and turned into a shallow superstition. People’s ownership of the national project was negated through the dictatorship itself. Many of the nation-building gains of the previous 60 years were destroyed. Now, after the fall of the dictatorship, there are signs of a new anti(neo)colonial movement; new energies to rewin history, culture and economic sovereignty, a new movement to rewin Indonesia. During the same 30 years of anti-national dictatorship, new discontents also arose in Aceh and West Papua, among some there giving rise to separate nationalist sentiments. How do and how will the two different kinds of sentiments connect or disconnect in the future politics of Indonesia, and indeed the archipelago, including East Timor, Malaysia and Singapore? Max Lane’s presentation will be followed by a question and answer period. Sponsored by ETAN. For more information contact nyetan@etan.org or call (718) 596-7668.

The film provides evidence Ennis came across that shows not just efforts to steal votes at the polls, but to systematically block millions of Americans from even casting a vote. As Ennis found out, the 2008 election has already been stolen: We need to swipe it back! Please join us to learn how. Free and accessible to the disabled.  Discussion to follow film.
