Alert #192  January 6, 2009
Dear Peace Advocate,

Violence will never bring peace to the Middle East. The idea that more bloodshed is a necessary step toward peace violates common sense. Yet once again the cease-fire has been broken, and once again families are being deprived of children, parents, relatives, friends, homes, possessions, and peace of mind.

It's easy to get caught up in divisive, polarizing rhetoric about who's right and who's wrong, but that only adds fuel to the conflict. As peace advocates, we need to speak out very clearly for a positive, pro-active solution. The long-term solution will involve addressing issues like territory, the right of return, security, and Jerusalem. But step one toward that solution is the immediate resumption of an unconditional, universal, permanent cease-fire. Without a permanent cease fire, there can be no further progress toward stability. Everything we do now must focus on that positive first step.

Please, in your five minutes for peace this week - and we hope you will spend even more time than that - advocate strongly for the immediate resumption of the cease fire. We are hearing rumors of a Congressional resolution supporting a cease-fire. Lobbying actions are also being planned. Events are already underway. There are many things you can do.
  • Contact your Representative and Senators: Here or 202-224-3121. Lobby them for the cease-fire. Ask them to lobby the Obama administration-elect on your behalf, and to attend your local events.
  • Lobby in groups. Contact the PANYS office, 646-723-1749, for more information. We're going to be paying special attention, of course, to new Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the next point person in resolving the Middle East conflict.
  • Join or organize a local vigil on behalf of resuming the cease-fire. See below.
  • Contact the Obama Transition Team: http://change.gov/page/content/contact/
  • Contact the State Department: www.state.gov or 202-647-6575.
  • Contact your local media. Phone into a talk show. Write a letter to the editor.

SCREENING OF “ZERO: AN INVESTIGATION INTO 9/11”
Featuring presentations from intellectual heavyweights Gore Vidal and Nobel Prize winner Dario Fo, the film challenges the official assumptions surrounding the 9/11 attacks. The importance of the film cannot be overstated. If its thesis is correct, the justification for declaring the war on terror is built on a series of outrageous lies. SPECIAL ROCKLAND COALITION FOR PEACE AND JUSTICE PEACE VIGIL
This is a special vigil to call for following the footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to end the war and bring all troops home now. January 2009 will mark the 80th anniv. of Dr. King’s birthday.  January 2009 Barack Obama will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States of America.  At this defining moment, the words of Dr. King in the ‘60s are amazingly relevant to the current wars and economic crisis.  They point out to Obama the road to peace and justice.
Saturday, January 17, 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.
NANUET.
Corner of Rte. 59 and North Middletown Road
ROCKLAND VIGIL FOR PEACE FOR IMMIGRANTS
The targeting and murder of Latino men makes tragically clear that we have not yet achieved Dr. King's complete dream, which was for all of us. In the second murder, the two Ecuadorian brothers were also targeted because they were walking together, and thought to be gay. We invite all people of good will to join us in remembering two hard working immigrants who came to this country seeking a better life, only to become victims of hateful violence. In doing so, we will honor Dr. King and his vision for our country. Organized by the Rockland Immigration Coalition.
Saturday, January 17, 7:00 p.m.
ALBANY.
Madison Theater, 1036 Madison Avenue
PREMIERE OF “WAITING FOR MERCY”
A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT ALBANY’S 2004 FBI “STING” CASE.

Written, produced, and directed by local documentary filmmaker Ellie Bernstein, and co-produced by Guilderland resident Tony Grocki, Waiting for Mercy tells the story of the fabricated FBI sting operation in Albany that made international headlines in the "war on terror" and that ended with the 2006 convictions of two Albany Muslims on terrorism-related charges. After the premiere of Waiting for Mercy on January 17, there will be a brief update about the case and a question-and-answer session with Bernstein, the filmmaker.  Admission to the film follows the Madison's standard ticket prices: $6 for children and seniors, $7 for adults during the matinees, and $8 for the evening shows.
Monday, January 19, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
