BROOKLYN FOR PEACE OPEN COMMUNITY MEETING
Join us to discussion challenges for the Brooklyn peace movement. The end of the Bush Administration has brought many welcome changes.  However, U.S. military activity in Afghanistan and Pakistan has escalated, U.S. troop levels in Iraq remain high, and for Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 the Obama Administration is requesting $686 billion in defense spending. Join us to discuss: How can we in Brooklyn play an effective role in advancing a peace agenda? How do we address ongoing crises in Gaza and Darfur? How can we more effectively link the work for peace with the urgent economic needs right here in Brooklyn?

RALLY BY THE FREE MUMIA ABU JAMAL COALITION
As you may know, there was a recent ruling that was not in his favor.  To learn more about his case, visit www.freemumia.com. We will be calling on our elected officials to speak out on the threatened execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal. Despite mounds of evidence of his innocence, and ample legal basis for overturning his conviction, and after 27 years of police, prosecutorial, and judicial misconduct, Mumia has been denied a new trial by the US Supreme Court.  He now faces execution or life in prison without parole.  All indications are that the Attorney General of Philadelphia, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the media supporters of both will be relentless in continuing to seek Mumia’s execution. A Community Meeting will follow at St. Mary’s Church.

GRANNY PEACE BRIGADE MOTHER’S DAY STROLL.
Bring your friends, dogs, children, grandchildren, grandparents and maybe even your mothers as we make our third annual pilgrimage from Columbus Circle to the Metropolitan Museum. As well as honoring Julia Ward Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation, this year’s stroll will focus on counter-recruitment issues and demilitarization. Dress as colorfully as you wish. We will have fliers for distribution. After some tunes by the Raging Grannies, we will start walking up Broadway to Columbus Avenue, continuing on Columbus through the Crafts Fair. We expect to arrive at 81st Street and Central Park West around 12:45. There we will read Howe’s Mother’s Day Proclamation and stand in silent vigil as we read some names of the war dead. At about 1:00, we will cross into the park, pass the Delacort Theater (where there are bathrooms to say nothing of Shakespeare) and continue to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. There we will have a brief closing ceremony. We will end shortly after 2. If you need more information, call Jenny at (917) 697-7602 or Joan at (718) 855-2581.

LIFT THE SEIGE OF GAZA:
CODE PINK FUND RAISER
A continuous wave of Code Pink delegations will be trying to get through the Egyptian and Israeli crossing in late May and June. We will be guests of the UN children's committee and the money raised will pay for playground equipment for the children of Gaza who are suffering tremendously both physically and psychologically from the siege. Over a hundred children lost BOTH their parents some killed right in front of them. The siege has turned Gaza in to an open air prison and is a war crime against innocent civilians. We will be having a reading of "Seven Israeli Children- a Play for Gaza," Palestinian Music, and a short video of the CodePink 60-person international delegation that visited Gaza for International Women's Day in March.

WHEN HEALERS HARM: ACCOUNTABILITY FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL ABUSE OF PEOPLE IN CUSTODY.
Hosted by the Center for Constitutional Rights and Physicians for Human Rights. Panel includes: Richard N. Gottfried, NY  State Assemblymember & Chair, NY State Assembly Committee on Health, Allen S. Keller, M.D., NYU/Bellevue Survivors of Torture Program & Physicians for Human Rights, Dr. Steven Reisner, Coalition for an Ethical Psychology & Physicians for Human Rights, Jamie Fellner, Esq., U.S. Program, Human Rights Watch, and Gitanjali Gutierrez, Esq., Center for Constitutional Rights. Psychologists, physicians and other personnel who were trained and licensed to heal were instrumental in creating and maintaining the U.S. government’s policy of torture in its overseas prisons. Health professionals designed torture tactics, directly inflicted and supervised abuse, gauged harm and enabled, covered up and failed to report abuse. It's time to hold accountable the healers who have harmed. Accountability matters not only to survivors of medical torture, but to health professionals, most of whom take seriously their commitment to do no harm. It also matters to the rest of us – as patients and members of civil society, we have a right to treatment by health professionals who we can trust, and a right to a government that upholds the law. EARTH DAY LOBBY DAY 2009
Earth Day Lobby Day is New York's largest annual environmental event, bringing together people from all over New York to hear from government and environment leaders, learn about current legislation, and lobby elected officials on environmental issues that are important to you. New York lawmakers have finally gotten serious about fighting global warming and have introduced monumental climate change prevention legislation. The ‘Global Warming Pollution Control Act’ would reduce New York’s greenhouse gas pollution levels 80% by 2050, the minimum recommended by experts to prevent the most serious consequences of climate change. Join hundreds of environmentalists from across the state in advocating for measures to protect our water, air, land and health. In addition, we will be lobbying on wetlands protection, electronic waste recycling, strengthening SEQRA, and celebrating the recent passage of the Bigger Better Bottle Bill. We are excited to announce that Governor Paterson, Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, and other state leaders will be speaking at this year’s Earth Day Lobby Day! To register for Earth Day Lobby Day please go to http://www.nypirg.org/enviro/lobbydaysignup.html. The event is free of charge.  If you have any questions, please contact Melissa Lynch at MelissaNypirg@gmail.com.

WHEN WOMEN SAY “NO” TO WAR: A MOTHER’S DAY CALL FOR PEACE
In her 1870 “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” Julia Ward Howe, suffragist, peace activist, and author of “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” wrote “We, the women of one country, Will be too tender of those of another country To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs." Guest speaker Felice Gelman will help us connect the origins of Mother's Day - centered on peacemaking by mothers of all backgrounds – to her participation in an international delegation of women to Gaza, focusing on the plight of the children there. When women of the world say "no" to war, will the world finally listen? This event is co-sponsored by the Iona College Peace and Justice Studies Program, the Westchester Peace and Justice Coalition, and CodePink Westchester.  It is free and open to the public. For information, contact Ted deSoyza (914) 235-1744 or Fredrica codepinkwestchester@hotmail.com.
