Alert #208     View message online: http://www.panys.org/alerts/208.htm
May 11, 2009
Dear Peace Activists,

Testifying before the full Senate Appropriations Committee last week, Secretaries Clinton and Gates explained their strategies and budget needs in preparation for a vote on the Supplemental Appropriations for Iraq and Afghanistan. Both repeatedly said that economic assistance and diplomacy are the keys to stability and security in the region.

Well, at least the rhetoric has changed, and no wonder. Every day it becomes clearer that there is no military solution to our problems in Iraq, Afghanistan or Pakistan. The suffering caused by American air strikes inside Afghanistan and Pakistan only stirs up more fear and hatred towards the United States. Deploying 21,000 more soldiers to Afghanistan without a viable, accountable exit strategy only decreases the prospects of a negotiated settlement.

A change in rhetoric alone, however, is not enough. You wouldn't know it to hear Secretaries Clinton and Gates, but only 8% of the funds in the Supplemental bill in question - which has swelled in the last ten days from $84.3 to 94.2 billion - have anything to do with non-military measures! All the rest is standard military funding.

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) is now introducing a bill that will require Secretary Gates to present Congress with an exit strategy for Afghanistan by December 2009. This bill already has 40 co-sponsors. To become a viable Amendment to the Supplemental, it needs more co-sponsors. Currently, the only NY Representatives on board are Maurice Hinchdy (D-22), Yvette Clarke (D-11), and Jose Serrano (D-16).

In your five minutes for peace this week, please join the National Congressional Call-in on Afhghanistan and Iraq. Call you Representative toll-free today or tomorrow at 1-800-517-5696. Ask to speak to the Foreign Policy staffer if available. Let them know that you want your Representative to:

  • Join the co-sponsors of the McGovern bill as an amendment to the Supplemental;
  • Insist on a exit stratgies and timelines for bringing troops home from Afghanistan and Iraq;
  • Move the majority of money for Afghanistan and Iraq from the military to constructive aid, development, and diplomacy toward a negotiated settlement
For futher talking points, the text of the Supplemental request, and analysis of where the billions are actually going, see New York Peace Network Alert #206 of April 28.

Once again, thank you for your continuing efforts for peace.

In Peace,

John Bostrom and Cheryl Wertz

A continuous wave of Code Pink delegations will be trying to get through the Egyptian and Israeli crossing in late May and June. We will be guests of the UN children's committee and the money raised will pay for playground equipment for the children of Gaza who are suffering tremendously both physically and psychologically from the siege. Over a hundred children lost BOTH their parents some killed right in front of them. The siege has turned Gaza in to an open air prison and is a war crime against innocent civilians. We will be having a reading of "Seven Israeli Children- a Play for Gaza," Palestinian Music, and a short video of the CodePink 60-person international delegation that visited Gaza for International Women's Day in March.

WHEN HEALERS HARM: ACCOUNTABILITY FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL ABUSE OF PEOPLE IN CUSTODY.
Hosted by the Center for Constitutional Rights and Physicians for Human Rights. Panel includes: Richard N. Gottfried, NY  State Assemblymember & Chair, NY State Assembly Committee on Health, Allen S. Keller, M.D., NYU/Bellevue Survivors of Torture Program & Physicians for Human Rights, Dr. Steven Reisner, Coalition for an Ethical Psychology & Physicians for Human Rights, Jamie Fellner, Esq., U.S. Program, Human Rights Watch, and Gitanjali Gutierrez, Esq., Center for Constitutional Rights. Psychologists, physicians and other personnel who were trained and licensed to heal were instrumental in creating and maintaining the U.S. government’s policy of torture in its overseas prisons. Health professionals designed torture tactics, directly inflicted and supervised abuse, gauged harm and enabled, covered up and failed to report abuse. It's time to hold accountable the healers who have harmed. Accountability matters not only to survivors of medical torture, but to health professionals, most of whom take seriously their commitment to do no harm. It also matters to the rest of us – as patients and members of civil society, we have a right to treatment by health professionals who we can trust, and a right to a government that upholds the law. SCREENING OF “THE END OF AMERICA”
AND Q&A WITH NAOMI WOLF
Don't miss this important new film!  This stunning indictment of the sweeping policy changes during the Bush Administration makes a chilling case about the threats to American democracy. Investigating parallels between our current situation and the rise of dictators and fascism in once-free societies, Wolf uncovers a number of deeply unsettling parallels--from the use of paramilitary groups and secret prisons, to the targeted suspension of the rule of law. Admission: Free (donations accepted to cover the costs) Sponsors: Flatbush For Peace, H.E.L.P. RECESSION SURVIVAL FAIR
Brooklyn for Barack, hosted by the Stuyvesant Heights Parents' Association, is planning a Recession Survival fair! The fair will focus on how we can help each other get through the current economic downturn. It will both give attendees as much information as possible about programs that already exist, and allow us to come together as a community to trade skills and knowledge. The Recession Survival fair will have several components. First, we will have tables for organizations that offer services or programs that can give immediate help to people who've been laid off or otherwise negatively impacted by the current economic crisis. Second, we will hold panel discussions of experts who can offer concrete information on key topics affecting our community during the recession: healthy eating on a budget, health care, jobs, credit management, and foreclosure information. Third, we’re planning to create a more informal community exchange of services and knowledge that goes beyond what’s available through official channels. Whether through online barter, or some other form of exchange, we will pool our resources as a community to provide ongoing help to our friends and neighbors. If you’d like to participate in the community exchange, please email us: continuethechange@gmail.com. If you are able to help plan the event (we need volunteers right now) and/or volunteer on the day itself, please let us know.

WHEN WOMEN SAY “NO” TO WAR: A MOTHER’S DAY CALL FOR PEACE
In her 1870 “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” Julia Ward Howe, suffragist, peace activist, and author of “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” wrote “We, the women of one country, Will be too tender of those of another country To allow our sons to be trained to injure theirs." Guest speaker Felice Gelman will help us connect the origins of Mother's Day - centered on peacemaking by mothers of all backgrounds – to her participation in an international delegation of women to Gaza,focusing on the plight of the children there. When women of the world say "no" to war, will the world finally listen? This event is co-sponsored by the Iona College Peace and Justice Studies Program, the Westchester Peace and Justice Coalition, and CodePink Westchester.  It is free and open to the public.
