Dear Peace Activists,

Last Thursday, President Obama spoke at the UN Security Council Summit on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Nuclear Disarmament, expressing his desire to stop the spread and use of nuclear weapons. He emphasized the importance of every nation's contribution to this cause and recognized the responsibility of nations with nuclear weapons to move towards disarmament, but he also acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead. As the President previously stated, the U.S. has a moral responsibility to act, and his words on Thursday uphold his conviction.

President Obama's speech discussed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, for which the next six months are critical because of the upcoming Review Conference.

In your five minutes for peace this week, please sign our online petition to President Obama (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/2244/t/9730/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=1223). Ask him to follow through with the goal of abolition nuclear weapons.

The world is focusing on this issue right now. The international community is paying close attention and the Obama administration is writing their Nuclear Posture Review, which will determine U.S. nuclear policy for the next 5-10 years.

Unfortunately, there are many cynics on this issue who believe that nuclear abolition is unrealistic. They will argue that setbacks, such as the idea that nuclear weapons are necessary for our safety, will prevent the realization of this dream. Now is the time for us to prove them wrong by giving five minutes to peace to let President Obama know that we are many people who fully support and believe in nuclear weapons abolition.

Thank you for all you do.
