Take Action

Dear Peace Activists,

The current situation in Haiti is a heart-wrenching disaster, but is it a disaster caused by an earthquake or by generations of colonialism and neglect? The recent earthquake was a 7.0 on the Richter scale. An estimated 200,000 people have been killed. The 1994 Northridge earthquake in California measured 6.9 on the same scale, but only 57 people were killed.

Millions of Americans have generously opened their hearts and wallets to the people of Haiti. Certainly that help is needed, but it will not ultimately solve Haiti’s problems or provide long-term relief for Haitians.

So what can the U.S. do for Haiti?

  • Pass comprehensive immigration reform. The number one source of income for Haitians is the money sent home from family in the U.S. At the end of last week, President Obama extended Temporary Protective Status to the estimated 100,000 Haitians living in the United States without legal status. That’s a step forward, but it is not enough. Temporary Protective Status is just that - temporary. We need real, comprehensive reform so that families can make long-term plans, build roots and become active participants in their communities.
  • Do not militarize humanitarian aid. While Americans feel good about uniformed soldiers feeding people, hungry and panicked Haitians are not the enemy. They should not be treated as such. Dozens of non-profit organizations have managed to control the distribution of humanitarian supplies and prevent looting, in Haiti and elsewhere, without the use of machine guns. Why can’t the U.S. government?
  • Give Haiti grants, not loans. Haiti does not need more debt. Make sure that the relief given helps Haiti rebuild its public sector so the country can provide its own citizens with basic public services.
President Obama has the power to make a real, substantive change in Haiti, both to alleviate suffering now and prevent it in the future. In your five minutes for peace this week, tell him that temporary protective status and aid at the end of a machine gun is not enough. We need real comprehensive immigration reform now.

In Peace,

Cheryl Wertz

Join us in support of the students, parents, teachers and communities of over 22 schools affected by the proposed closings and charter takeovers. We are picketing Bloomberg’s residence because he is in charge of these wrongful closings. We need to bring our opposition to his doorstep. The city and Mayor Bloomberg have failed our public schools. School closings and their replacement with boutique or charter schools (that exclude our neediest children) are not the answer. Our public schools need ore supports and greater resources. Step up the pressure! For more information email gemnyc@gmail.com or call 718-601-4901.

Hosted by the Peace and Justice Task Force of All Souls Church. Free event – donations appreciated. “Pray the Devil Back to Hell” chronicles the remarkable story of the courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their shattered country. Thousands of women — ordinary mothers, grandmothers, aunts and daughters, both Christian and Muslim — came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed only with white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they demanded a resolution to the country's civil war. Their actions were a critical element in bringing about an agreement during the stalled peace talks. Light refreshments will be served.
