Dear Peace Activists and Friends,

This past week the Senate unanimously approved new sanctions punishing Iran's energy industry for the country's suspected nuclear weapons program. The sanctions are applicable to companies that are in business with or are linked financially to Iran's Revolutionary Guard. They are also aimed at companies that contribute to the country’s energy industry.

Many have claimed that these sanctions are the toughest ever imposed on the country, and that they will have very crippling effects on the Iranian economy. There is serious doubt that they will persuade the country to put a halt to its nuclear weapons program. If anything, these sanctions will only serve to agitate US-Iranian relations even further, which may place the development of nuclear weapons even higher on the Iranian agenda.

There is widespread concern that these sanctions will only worsen human rights conditions in the country, but the concern for the basic human rights of Iranian citizens has taken a backseat to nuclear weapons.

This week Congress will be voting on whether or not to approve a $59 billion supplemental bill, where the majority of the funding will go to support the war and occupation of Afghanistan.

The supplemental war-funding bill includes $33 billion to pay for the expanding U.S. war in Afghanistan plus $26 billion to contribute to other causes. Funding for these other concerns, like relief money for Haiti, distracts voters from the true aim of the bill, which is to support the war in Afghanistan.

Do not let your Senators make two mistakes in two consecutive weeks!

Click here to email our Senators, urging them to promote peace by not supporting the supplemental funding bill.

Peace,
