Hiroshima/Nagasaki 65 - Attend An Event

Dear Peace Activists and Friends,

As many of you know, August 6th 2010 will mark the 65th anniversary of the United States dropping an atomic bomb over Hiroshima, Japan. This was the first time in history that the atom bomb had been used in war and only three days later, the United States made another horrific choice and dropped another bomb over Nagasaki. Not only were thousands of people incinerated in an instant by a fireball with a diameter of 410 meters reaching temperatures hotter than the surface of the sun, but also an entire city was leveled. After the initial blast, radioactive isotopes rained down on the city for a five-mile radius in the form of “black rain” that fell for over an hour. Initially surviving the blast, the remaining inhabitants suffered from severe burns and extreme radiation exposure. Days, months, and years after the bomb was dropped, survivors are still developing cancer and other diseases as well as dealing with birth defects in the following generations.

On August 6th and 9th in 1945, the United States were the terrorists we now so fear. These are two days we must never forget, not only to honor the victims, but also to ensure we never allow an atomic bomb to be dropped ever again. Check out the list and Calendar below, also available on our website, to find an event near you to commemorate these days and to gather with other individuals who share a desire to end all nuclear weapons.

  • A movie screening by Peace Action Bay Ridge as well as a March and Vigil.
  • A Remembrance ceremony by Peace Action Staten Island including theater, poetry, and music.
  • A Photo exhibit, discussion, and procession in Greenwich Village.
  • The annual "No Nukes, No Wars, Save the Planet" celebration in Great Neck, with noted community leaders, ministers, activists, music, and children's ceremony.
  • Interfaith ceremonies, processions, and vigils in Syracuse, Albany, Cambridge, Schenectady, Grafton, Avon, and Guilderland.
  • A public reading of John Hershey's "Hiroshima" in Albany.
  • Broome County's annual Remembrance Breakfast in Binghamton, featuring Professor Herb Bix.
The dropping of a nuclear bomb must never happen again and to remind ourselves of this we must never forget the innocent who continue to suffer the after effects in Hiroshima and Nagaski.

In Peace,

Linda McSorley
